As a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, I am deeply concerned about the high incidence of falls among elderly patients, particularly those affected by polypharmacy—the use of multiple medications. Nearly 30% of older adults experience falls each year, with individuals taking five or more medications facing a 50% increased risk. Research shows that falls can be directly linked to medication side effects, especially from common prescriptions like blood pressure medications and sedatives. Generally, for focused disease management, or symptom management, there are "safer" medication options to choose. There are also medications that should be avoided in the elderly due to higher risk for adverse side effects.
It’s crucial for healthcare providers to regularly review medication regimens to ensure they are necessary and effective. I urge my patients and their caregivers to actively participate in medication management by keeping an updated list, reporting side effects, and discussing prescriptions with their healthcare team.
By addressing polypharmacy and its risks, we can work together to create a safer environment and maintain independence. Your health and safety are our top priority—let’s take proactive steps to reduce the risk of falls, reduce medication side effects, enhance your well-being and improve quality of life!!!
